Context and Discovery
In 1932, according to Lindqvist (1941/42 II, p. 141), this stone slab leaned against the inner side of the eastern churchyard wall, about 15 m south of the northeast corner of the cemetery. Its original find circumstances are uncertain, most probably it had been re-used as building material in the church or the churchyard wall. Another stone (GP 546 Väskinde kyrka I) that appears to be the same type as Väskinde kyrka IV, was found built into a hatch in the attic of Väskinde church.

Measurements, Material and Condition
The Limestone slab is 195 cm long, 55.5 cm wide, and 13 cm thick. The upper narrow side is convex and smoothly hewn with a 1.5 cm wide chamfered edge connecting it to the broad side. The broad side is weathered and abraded, but the stone is mostly complete except for a small piece of the upper left corner having been broken off. The broad side was likely hewn flat, particularly on the upper half of the stone, and the decorative border can still be observed along the upper edge and two short sides. Both short sides are smoothly hewn with the left side being straight and the right side being curved and slightly acutely angled. The lower edge and the back side of the stone are rough and unprocessed.

Description of Ornament and Images
“The obverse is decorated with two shallow grooves, each 1 cm wide, the first of which runs 1.5 cm inwards from the chamfer, the other 1.7 cm inwards from the first groove.” (Lindqvist 1941/42 II, p. 142). The two parallel chiseled grooves run along the upper convex edge of the stone and then turn at the upper left and right corners and continue down the two short sides. Although the groove decoration is damaged in some sections, they appear to run approximately 28–30 cm along the short ends and stop where the hewing of the stone ends on the bottom section of the stone. A photo of the slab is provided in Lindqvist’s book (ibid. I, fig. 14).

Type and Dating
Lindqvist (1941/42 I, pp. 28, 31–33, 110) categorized Väskinde kyrka IV as a kerbstone (Randstein) that he includes within his ʻAbschnittʼ A which dates to circa AD 400–600 (see also Oehrl 2019a, pp. 8–10). According to Lindqvist (1933, pp. 105, 107; 1941/1942 I, pp. 31–33), the kerbstones formed an edge chain which surrounded a grave mound, possibly with an erected Type A picture stone in the center. However, no evidence has been found to confirm that any of the erected Type A picture stones were placed within a grave mound (Larkin 2023a, p. 50). The Väskinde kyrka IV stone provided the name for Lindqvist’s (1941/42 I, pp. 28, 33) Väskinde category (Västkindetypus) of kerbstones, which is characterized by pairs of linear grooves on the broad side of the stone that run parallel to the outer edge and serve as the only decorative elements on the stone.
