Context and Discovery
The fragment is integrated as the eleventh step from the bottom in the lower part of the tower stairs, with its obverse facing upwards. According to Lindqvist, it is possible that the fragments GP 499 Tingstäde kyrka II, GP 500 Tingstäde kyrka III, GP 501 Tingstäde kyrka IV and Tingstäde kyrka V, which are all incorporated into the stairs of the tower, originate from one and the same monument (II, pp. 131–132) (see IX).

In total, not fewer than 26 picture stones from Tingstäde church are registered in Lamm/Nylén 2003 – The stones Tingstäde kyrka I–XX were published by Lindqvist. In 1984, Beata Böttger-Niedenzu discovered GP 507–509 Tingstäde kyrka 21–23, and GP 494 Tingstäde kyrka 24. Two more stones, which are incorporated into the wall of the tower, were discovered between 1990 and 2002 (GP 497–498 Tingstäde kyrka 25–26). The first Romanesque building with a nave and an apsidal choir was erected during the 12th century. In the beginning of the 13th century, the nave was enlarged, and around the middle of the century the old choir was replaced by the present one. The Romanesque portal which today leads to the sacristy probably represents the choir portal of the 12th century church which was re-used in the new building. The tower was probably built together with the new choir, i.e., around 1250, but was raised by three floors during the 14th century.

Measurements, Material and Condition
The fragment forms a narrow rectangle which preserves a part of the original upper edge of the monument. “Limestone slab, 20 cm thick. The obverse is hewn flat and now severely damaged by footsteps. The narrow side facing outwards is 75 cm long and nicely hewn flat for a width of up to 17 cm; like Nos II and III, it has a broad chamfer towards the obverse, for which reason this fragment possibly could have belonged together with Nos II and III. The narrow side is considerably weathered – as can be expected, as the convex curvature in the longitudinal direction suggests that the fragment represents part of a picture stone’s top” (Lindqvist 1941/42 II, p. 132).

Description of Ornament and Images
Lindqvist (1941/42 II, p. 131) describes the carvings as follows: “The decoration consists of three broad slightly chiselled grooves along the chamfer as well as, further in, two undulating bands separated by a groove. These undulating bands appear to have been formed exclusively by carved lines, without chiselled areas inside or outside of them.” A drawing by Sörling reproduced in Lindqvist’s book (II, fig. 536) is the only published illustration of the stone. It clearly depicts the ornament described by Lindqvist.

Type and Dating
The fragment belongs to an early-type picture stone, i.e. Type A according to Lindqvist’s typology (“Abschnitt” A), dating to about AD 400 to 600. Lindqvist assumes that it was part of the same picture stone as GP 499 Tingstäde kyrka II and GP 500 Tingstäde kyrka III (and possibly also GP 501 Tingstäde kyrka IV) (see IV) that, in his opinion, belonged to the Brotypus, a group of tall Type A stones characterized by a large roundel in the upper half and a pair of small disk motifs below (1941/42 I, pp. 27–28; cf. Hauck 1983a, pp. 541–542). (see IV). The mirrored wave ornament on the upper edge of the stone, which is preserved on fragment V, can be compared with the head borders of GP 43 Bro kyrka I and GP 44 Bro kyrka II but also GP 537 Vallstena Vallstenarum I, at least as far as their principle of design is concerned.
