Context and Discovery The fragment is reused as the second step from the bottom in the lower part of the tower stairs, its obverse facing upwards. According to Lindqvist (1941/42 II, p. 131), it was observed by Efraim Lundmark and Gabriel Gustafson in 1913. In Lindqvist’s opinion, it is possible that the fragments Tingstäde kyrka II, GP 500 Tingstäde kyrka III, GP 501 Tingstäde kyrka IV and GP 502 Tingstäde kyrka V, which are all incorporated into the stairs of the tower, originate from one and the same monument (II, pp. 131–132) (see IX).
In total, not fewer than 26 picture stones from Tingstäde church are registered in Lamm/Nylén 2003 – The stones Tingstäde kyrka I–XX were published by Lindqvist. In 1984, Beata Böttger-Niedenzu discovered GP 507–509 Tingstäde kyrka 21–23, and GP 494 Tingstäde kyrka 24. Two more stones, which are incorporated into the wall of the tower, were discovered between 1990 and 2002 (GP 497–498 Tingstäde kyrka 25–26). The first Romanesque building with a nave and an apsidal choir was erected during the 12th century. In the beginning of the 13th century, the nave was enlarged, and around the middle of the century the old choir was replaced by the present one. The Romanesque portal which today leads to the sacristy probably represents the choir portal of the 12th century church which was re-used in the new building. The tower was probably built together with the new choir, i.e., around 1250, but was raised by three floors during the 14th century. Measurements, Material and Condition The fragment forms a narrow rectangle which preserves a part of the original lateral edge of the monument. “Limestone slab, just over 20 cm thick. The obverse is hewn flat and for the most part now very much abraded. The narrow side facing outwards [i.e., the stone’s original lateral edge] is more than 60 cm long and is hewn flat at right angles towards the obverse for a width of up to 20 cm, with an almost 3 cm wide chamfer in between” (Lindqvist 1941/42 II, p. 131).
Description of Ornament and Images Lindqvist (1941/42 II, p. 131) describes the carvings as follows: “Of the decoration, the remains of two shallow, carved grooves can be made out along the chamfer and a small section of the corona of a large roundel in the field. The inner spandrels between the corona’s circles are slightly chiselled.” A drawing by Sörling reproduced in Lindqvist’s book (II, fig. 534) is the only published illustration of the stone. It shows the described ornaments.
Interpretation of the Imagery No interpretation
Type and Dating The fragment belongs to an early-type picture stone, i.e. Type A according to Lindqvist’s typology (“Abschnitt” A), dating to about AD 400 to 600. Lindqvist speculates that it belongs to a tall picture stone of his Brotypus, which is characterized by a big roundel in the upper half and a pair of small disk motifs below (1941/42 I, pp. 27–28; cf. Hauck 1983a, pp. 541–542). In his opinion, the fragments Tingstäde kyrka II, GP 500 Tingstäde kyrka III (and possibly also GP 501 Tingstäde kyrka IV and GP 502 Tingstäde kyrka V) originate from one and the same monument (II, pp. 131–132) (see IV).
