Context and Discovery The fragment is integrated, with the obverse facing downwards, as the east lintel stone in the hatch between the tower and the nave’s attic (Lindqvist 1941/42 II, p. 134). Directly next, i.e., to the west of it, GP 485 Tingstäde kyrka XII is also installed as lintel stone. In total, not fewer than 26 picture stones from Tingstäde church are registered in Lamm/Nylén 2003 – The stones Tingstäde kyrka I–XX were published by Lindqvist. In 1984, Beata Böttger-Niedenzu discovered GP 507–509 Tingstäde kyrka 21–23, and GP 494 Tingstäde kyrka 24. Two more stones, which are incorporated into the wall of the tower, were discovered between 1990 and 2002 (GP 497–498 Tingstäde kyrka 25–26). The first Romanesque building with a nave and an apsidal choir was erected during the 12th century. In the beginning of the 13th century, the nave was enlarged, and around the middle of the century the old choir was replaced by the present one. The Romanesque portal which today leads to the sacristy probably represents the choir portal of the 12th century church which was re-used in the new building. The tower was probably built together with the new choir, i.e., around 1250, but was raised by three floors during the 14th century.

Measurements, Material and Condition The visible part of the slab is almost square and preserves a part of the original (upper?) edge of the monument. “Limestone slab, 18 cm thick; seen from the east, it is visible for a length of 115 cm. The obverse probably is naturally smooth, the narrow side facing east is slightly convex longitudinally and hewn for a width of up to 16 cm. For the most part, it is hewn at right angles towards the obverse, features slightly concave, 1-inch-wide grooves running lengthwise, and is separated from the obverse by a 1.5-cm-wide chamfer” (Lindqvist 1941/42 II, pp. 134–135). A crack runs across the entire surface and seems to divide the panel in half.
Description of Ornament and Images Lindqvist describes the carvings as follows (1941/42 II, p. 135): “The decoration of the obverse consists of a framing border that is defined both on the inside and the outside by two or three shallow grooves, perhaps with a zigzag band formed by double grooves running between them.” The drawing by Olof Sörling reproduced in Lindqvist’s book (II, fig. 544) is the only published illustration of the stone. In the drawing, however, there is no trace of the zigzag pattern described by Lindqvist in the catalogue text. However, when examining the 3D model with different filters, these lines can indeed be traced and possibly understood as a diamond pattern.
Interpretation of the Imagery No interpretation
Type and Dating The fragment represents an early-type monument, i.e. Type A according to Lindqvist’s typology (“Abschnitt” A), dating to about AD 400 to 600. In Lindqvist’s opinion, it represents a kerbstone that once was part of the surrounding kerb of a grave mound (1941/42 II, p. 134). If the border does indeed contain a zigzag pattern, as Lindqvist notes (see VI), then the stone is comparable to the possible kerbstones GP 482 Tingstäde kyrka VIII and GP 483 Tingstäde kyrka X (recumbent kerbstones ʻwith simple borders filled with zigzag lines and the likeʼ – ibid. I, pp. 28, 33). As said, however, it seems to be more of a diamond pattern, which would then be best compared with GP 220 källunge kyrka II. GP 482 Tingstäde kyrka VIII
