Context and Discovery ⓘThe fragment is integrated, with the obverse facing downwards, as the west lintel stone in the hatch between the tower and the nave’s attic (Lindqvist 1941/42 II, p. 134). Directly next, i.e., to the east of it, GP 486 Tingstäde kyrka XIII is also installed as lintel stone. In total, not fewer than 26 picture stones from Tingstäde church are registered in Lamm/Nylén 2003 – The stones Tingstäde kyrka I–XX were published by Lindqvist. In 1984, Beata Böttger-Niedenzu discovered GP 507–509 Tingstäde kyrka 21–23, and GP 494 Tingstäde kyrka 24. Two more stones, which are incorporated into the wall of the tower, were discovered between 1990 and 2002 (GP 497–498 Tingstäde kyrka 25–26). The first Romanesque building with a nave and an apsidal choir was erected during the 12th century. In the beginning of the 13th century, the nave was enlarged, and around the middle of the century the old choir was replaced by the present one. The Romanesque portal which today leads to the sacristy probably represents the choir portal of the 12th century church which was re-used in the new building. The tower was probably built together with the new choir, i.e., around 1250, but was raised by three floors during the 14th century. Measurements, Material and Condition ⓘThe visible part of the slab is almost square and preserves a part of the original (upper?) edge of the monument. “Limestone slab, up to 16 cm thick. Seen from the west, it is visible for a length of up to 85 cm. The obverse probably is naturally smooth, the narrow side facing west is slightly convex longitudinally and for the most part hewn at right angles towards the obverse, but it is characterised by shallow, about 1-inch-wide grooves running lengthwise and separated from the obverse by an about 1 cm wide chamfer” (Lindqvist 1941/42 II, p. 134).
Description of Ornament and Images ⓘThe only visible decoration consists of two slightly chiselled grooves on the obverse, each about 1 cm wide, one of which runs along the chamfer and the other runs parallel to the first at a distance of 20 cm. The drawing by Sörling reproduced in Lindqvist’s book (II, fig. 543) is the only published illustration of the stone. According to Lindqvist, it was made after a sketch by Fredrik Nordin.

Type and Dating ⓘThe fragment represents an early-type monument, i.e. Type A according to Lindqvist’s typology (“Abschnitt” A), dating to about AD 400 to 600. In Lindqvist’s opinion, it represents a kerbstone that once was part of the surrounding kerb of a grave mound (1941/42 II, p. 134). The simple decoration corresponds most closely to Lindqvist’s Väskindetypus. These kerbstones only have groove decoration on the obverse (ibid. I, p. 33).
