Context and Discovery There is no information available about the find spot and the find context of the stone. “Since time immemorial, the fragment had stood leaning against the church wall, but now, it is standing at the inside of the north cemetery wall close to the northeast corner” (Lindqvist 1941/41 II, p. 110). In this location, it can be seen already on the earliest available photograph of the stone taken by Harald Faith-Ell in 1937 (ATA Run- och bildstenssamling B3:102). It is still standing there today.
Measurements, Material and Condition “Limestone slab, about 15 cm thick. The obverse is naturally flat and curved. The narrow sides are partly hewn at right angles towards the obverse and rounded towards the back. The reverse is rough and unworked. The surviving height is 102 cm. The width of the head is 77 cm, that of the neck 70. At the broken edge, the body is 87 cm wide” (Lindqvist 1941/41 II, p. 110). The obverse of the slab is relatively flat and smooth but partly curved and uneven. As it has been exposed to the weather without any protection since time immemorial, the destruction of its original carved surface has already reached an advanced stage. It is totally eroded and overgrown with lichens – which can be seen already on the photograph of the stone taken by Harald Faith-Ell in 1937.
Description of Ornament and Images No traces of carvings have survived.
Interpretation of the Imagery No interpretation
Type and Dating Mushroom-shaped late-type picture stone, which means Lindqvist’s “Abschnitt” C/D or E (1941/42 I, p. 44). At first glance, the monument could be regarded as a dwarf stone with its root hewn off, however, it more likely represents the head, neck, and upper body of a tall picture stone, which must have been at least 1.50–2.00 m tall. In his tabular overview of the Type-C stones, Lindqvist (1941/42 I, p. 44) subsumes Silte kyrka under the heading “Erblindete Steine” (ʻblinded stonesʼ, which means ʻstones with obliterated surfaceʼ) C–E, namely as a tall stone (“Großstein”), not as a dwarf stone. The stone is not considered in Rundqvist’s (2012) typological study. As no decoration is preserved on the monument, it can only be roughly dated between the 8th century and around AD 1100.
