Quote from Runor

Context and Discovery
The stone was found during restauration of the church in 1914, but just as for the fragment GP 333 Rone kyrka I, there is no information about the exact find spot (GR I, p.70). A note in ATA says that a runestone fragment was found in the wall behind the baptismal font, but an addition to the note (written with another pen) says that according to pharmacist Hamner, the runic inscription was applied directly to the wall and should thus indicate an inscription in plaster.

There is a copy of a drawing originally made by Olof Sörling attached to the catalogue post in SHM, as well as photos by Harald Faith-Ell in 1933 (Run- och bildstenssamlingen). A note in the record at SHM says that the fragment is a gift from the congregation in Rone (SHM inv. nr. 15095). A picture stone fragment is mentioned in singular, but the two fragments GP 333 and GP 334 are recorded under the same inventory number. These two runic fragments are the only known picture stones from the parish.

The whole church in Rone was built in the Middle Ages, but there is a sandstone baptismal font that is attributed to Hegvald and probably produced in the 12th century. The restoration work conducted in 1913–1915 seems to have been substantial and affected several parts of the church (BeBR), both walls and the floor, and it cannot be assessed where the stone fragment might have been found.

Measurements, Material and Condition
Height 16 cm, width 22, thickness 10.5 cm. Limestone. The stone was cut evenly on the carved side only.

Description according to Lindqvist: “The obverse is hewn flat and polished, the narrow side also is hewn flat and polished at right angles towards the obverse, across its full width (9.5 cm). Of the reverse, nothing has survived. A length of 15 cm is preserved of the narrow side; at a right angle to it, the piece’s maximum width is 22 cm. The decoration is executed with slightly more than 2 mm wide and deep lines with rounded bases that define an inscribed ribbon of 5.5 cm height. The background field was not chiselled” (Lindqvist 1941/42, p. 107).

According to Elias Wessén, the fact that this fragment has been cut even only on one side, in combination with the difference in thickness, show that the two fragments GP 334 and GP 333 belong to two different stones. In addition, the width of the rune band as well as the shape of the runes u, r and a are different (GR I, p. 70).
