Context and Discovery The fragment was found in storage at Gotlands Museum without bearing an inventory number.
Measurements, Material and Condition The picture stone fragment represents an almost square-shaped limestone slab of 32 x 36 cm.
Description of Ornament and Images Parts of a roundel that represented the main motif of the monument as well as remains of the decorated edge border can be observed. The roundel features a spiral motif, the edge border a geometrized tendril pattern (see IX). Standing on the roundel, traces of a simplified human figure with round shield and spear have been observed. However, this detail remains quite uncertain.
Interpretation of the Imagery No interpretation
Type and Dating The fragment represents a part of the head of an early-type picture stone, i.e., Type A according to Lindqvist’s typology, dating between AD 400 and 600. The border decoration, a geometrized tendril pattern that looks like a row of rhombi, is typical for Lindqvist’s Martebotypus (1941/42 I, p. 27). However, a spiral pattern as main motif in the head field is an unusual feature within the Martebo group.
