Context and Discovery The stone fragment, which is broken into two parts, was found in the storage of Gotlands Museum without any further information. In a collection of photo documentation in Gotlands Museum, a photo of GP 305 Unknown Find Spot, Stenkyrka? is on one page which is titled ‘Stenkyrka kyrka’, so this stone comes probably from Stenkyrka Church (GF Stenkyrka foto no. 966.111).
Measurements, Material and Condition GP 305 Unknown Find Spot, Stenkyrka? comprises two matching fragments of one large stone. Put together, the two fragments have an approximately rectangular shape, and the fracture runs across lengthwise. After its primary use, the stone was reworked into a rectangular shape. No original borders any more. The surface is very smooth, especially the left side, possibly from being walked on.
Each fragment is 117 cm high. One fragment is 50 cm wide, the other 32. They are 23 cm thick, which is unusually thick for a Gotlandic picture stone. The fragments form probably less than 25 % of the whole original monument.
Description of Ornament and Images A row of three fountain-shaped, abstract, almost geometrical elements (stylised animals or plants?), cropped and not complete.
The ornamentation is somewhat similar to GP 324 Unknown Find Spot, but the latter shows only one such ornament, not several.
The ornaments were, according to the photo in the museums’ archive, painted black, probably after the fragments were retrieved from the find spot, no further information about the painting is available. In 2022, the painting was no longer visible.
It is possible that GP 305 Unknown Find Spot, Stenkyrka? was not a picture stone at all but a medieval or early modern monument, as the stone slab is unusually thick and the ornamentation is very unusual for picture stones.
