Context and Discovery The stone was identified in 1984 by B. Böttger-Niedenzu, who submitted her master’s thesis on Gotland’s picture stones to the Ludwig-Maximilians-University of Munich in 1982, went through the Gotlandic rural churches during the years 1981–1985 and discovered not fewer than 38 previously unknown picture stones, which she published in a brief catalogue in 1988. The small fragment in Lummelunda kyrka is incorporated into the floor, situated under a pew in the north-western corner of the choir. A Type A stone is situated in front of the western portal of the church, re-used as step – GP 246 Lummelunda kyrka (I).
The present tower and the nave of Lummelunda church were erected around 1200, together with a Romanesque choir, which was replaced by the present Gothic style choir around 1250. GP 246 Lummelunda kyrka (I)
Measurements, Material and Condition The limestone slab is almost square-shaped, 0.40 x 0.46 m. Its surface is almost completely abraded and very smooth. The stone is situated under a pew but fully accessible.
Description of Ornament and Images The surface of the stone is completely polished and smoothed, only on its western edge (i.e., on the right, when sitting on the pew) can a slightly outwardly curved double line or band be discerned, which stands out only very slightly and can only be seen in oblique light.
Interpretation of the Imagery No interpretation
Type and Dating Since no remains of the outer contour of the monument have been preserved and only the pale remains of a double line are discernible, it is not possible to precisely determine the type of the possible picture stone. It appears conceivable that the slab represents a fragment of a larger Type C/D stone and that the slightly curved double line belongs to the framing of the edge border. However, this remains uncertain. Ultimately, it remains impossible to prove whether the slab represents a picture stone at all.
