Context and Discovery
According to Fredrik Nordin, the stone was found in Smiss in Kräklingbo parish. It was donated to Gotland Museum in 1918 by Lektor M. Klintberg (GR I, p. 227).

In total, five picture stones have been found in this parish, GP 214–218, four of which are fragments that have been found in Smiss. Smiss also has a large grave field (L1976:2522 in Fornsök).

Measurements, Material and Condition
Limestone slab, of which today only one piece of up to 5 cm thickness has survived. Fragment, the size is 0.34 x 0.32 m. Picture stone reused as a runestone.

“The obverse polished flat. Next to the runes outside the inscribed ribbon, a small section of the original narrow side has survived; this narrow side is dressed at approximately right angles towards the obverse, yet slightly convex. The banner and with it the associated lines and runes are distinctly carved, with rounded bases. For the runes, a drill frequently was used. On that half of the stone that probably belonged to the root of the runestone, several shallow, carved lines can be seen that probably were part of the kind of borders decorated with a simplified twisted cord pattern, which usually occur on picture stones of considerably older type and thus appear to be evidence in favour of the notion that this slab was used as a picture stone on two different occasions” (Lindqvist 1941/42, II, p. 83).

Description of Ornament and Images
There are carvings of different phases on this stone. The first phase, that of an older picture stone, is represented by a c. 5.5 cm high twisted cord pattern [Sw. repstavsmotiv], on what had been the root of the runestone. A corner is visible, where the twisted cord meets two other lines. This older motif must have been observed by Fredrik Nordin, as the ornament is clearly visible in his rubbing (ATA). In the second phase, the picture stone was recut to a runestone with 11th-century runestone style ornament and an inscription. The straight line running from the rune band across the fragment seems unconnected and might belong to the older ornament (Lindqvist 1941/42, p. 83).

Interpretation of the Imagery
Judging by the twisted cord, the stone may first have been worked into a picture stone of Lindqvist’s type A or B. What is interesting is that there are two other fragments with a twisted cord border found in Smiss in Kräklingbo, i.e., in or near the same farm: GP 216 Kräklingbo Smiss I and GP 215 Kräklingbo Smiss IV, both of Lindqvist type B or C. These fragments are thin, too, only 6–7 cm thick and up to 8 cm thick respectively.

Runic Context and Comments
The runestone carving is of small dimensions; the runes are only a few centimetres high. The shape of the runestone when it was complete cannot be made out. The only word in the inscription that has been identified is ‘and’. The last three runes ari stand outside the band, indicating that this is near the end of the inscription and that there was not room enough for the whole inscription within the band.

Type and Dating
Picture stone of type A, B or possibly C, that has been recut to an 11th-century type E-stone.
