Context and Discovery ⓘThe stone fragment is recorded in the 1978 inventory, including a sketch-like drawing; in Lammʼs list it is registered among the picture stones found between 1976 and 1979 (Lamm/Nylén 2003, p. 202). The actual find spot is not recorded; probably it was discovered on the property of Lindvide gård (farm), possibly by ploughing. Since its discovery, the stone was kept in the farmyard/garden of Lindvide gård, placed about 13 m south-west of the farm houseʼs north-western corner and 4 m south of the brewhouse. Since the late 2010s, however, the slab is not there anymore and currently is not traceable.
Measurements, Material and Condition ⓘThe limestone slab is 0.6 m high and 0.4 m wide, its thickness is about 3–5 cm. The carved surface is heavily weathered. The major part of the almost rectangular stone fragment represents its root and its base, while only a small part of the lower image field is preserved. The only documentation of the stone and its carvings is available in a sketch-like drawing added to the regarding inventory entry.
Description of Ornament and Images ⓘAs noted above, the major part of the slab represents the picture stoneʼs root and its base, the latter of which is decorated with a horizontal zig-zag border. Only a small part of the lower image field is preserved, featuring remains of the lateral border decoration, which represents a typical step pattern (geometrized twisted cord), and a pair of facing birds. The bird on the left-hand side features a massive body with a pointed tail and a long neck, while most of its head is missing. The bird on the right-hand side is even more damaged; only its body can be discerned. Nevertheless, the birds clearly correspond to the aquatic birds frequently depicted on the dwarf stones of ʻAbschnittʼ B (see IX).
Interpretation of the Imagery ⓘThere are at least ten Type B picture stones with images of single aquatic birds or facing pairs of waterfowl known so far (see IX). For more information about the possible origin of this motif in Christian iconography and its interpretation in a pre-Christian Scandinavian context, in particular, concerning eschatological beliefs and ideas of the afterlife journey, see GP 276 När Rikvide I. Type and Dating ⓘMiddle-type picture stone, i.e., Type B according to Lindqvist, dating between AD 500 and 700. It could be assigned to Lindqvistʼs Stenstugruppe (1941/42 I, pp. 37), which, in particular, is characterized by depictions of aquatic birds in the lower field and a simple vessel in the upper field of the stone. Those monuments are frequently decorated on both sides. Lindqvist considers them to have been placed pairwise on graves. The currently known Type B monuments featuring single or pairs of aquatic birds are the following: GP 142 Halla Broa VII, GP 165 Halla Broa XVII, GP 129 Hablingbo Stenstu, GP 276 När Rikvide I, GP 277 När Rikvide 2, GP 10 Alva St. Ringome, GP 96 Garda Smiss I, GP 274 Norrlanda Bringes, GP 200 Hemse Lindvide, and the Type B dwarf stone found in Grobin, Latvia (Petrenko 1991; Lamm 1991; Lamm/Nylén 2003, pp. 210–211).
A wide horizontal border with zigzag pattern along the base can also be seen on other monuments of the Stenstu group, on GP 93 Gammelgarn Högstens and GP 129 Hablingbo Stenstu as well as GP 146 Halla Broa VIII. On GP 143 Halla Broa I, the zigzag pattern is filling the background of the image field.
