Context and Discovery In 1969, the stone was found during cultivation of a meadow (Fole Änge 1:2). The meadow is situated approximately 700 m east of the hillfort (fornborg) in Fole parish. The slab was discovered together with the picture stone GP 82 Fole Änge 1. After their discovery both stones were brought to the farmstead, Lilla Ryftes, which lies circa 1000 m north-west of the find spot.
According to Lindqvist (1941/42 I, pp. 40, 47–48, 58–61; 1964), picture stones of the cist stone Type (see IX) were used either pairwise representing grave markers or in a group of four forming cist-shaped (grave or sacrificial) monuments. However, all known cist stones have been discovered in secondary contexts (Stenkvist 2014). GP0082
Measurements, Material and Condition The limestone slab is circa 50 cm high, 54 cm wide, and about 10 cm thick (###). It can be described as a rectangular slab with an arched top edge. It is likely that to the left and right of this arch, respectively, there originally were short protruding corners, a characteristic feature of the so-called cist stones. Here, however, they are broken off. The stone’s root seems to be broken off as well. Thus, the fragment represents the part of the monument, which once had been visible above ground. The obverse is even and heavily weathered.
Description of Ornament and Images No remains of carvings discernable.
Interpretation of the Imagery No interpretation
Type and Dating The typical outline of a small gavel-like slab with wave-shaped upper edge, a so-called cist stone, is largely preserved. Most of those stones represent late-type picture stones, belonging to ʻAbschnittʼ C/D or E according to Lindqvist. There is only a very small number of Type B cist stones known to date (see in particular Halla Broa V–VI). As no decoration is left on the stone, the cist stone from Fole Änge can only be roughly dated to between AD 500 and around 1100. The stone’s size, however, more probably indicates a Type C/D or E cist stone rather than a Type B monument. GP 144 Halla Broa V
