Context and Discovery “Found about 1920, 200 m southeast of the junction north of the d in Siffride in the geological map sheet Burgsvik, lying in a “vast” ground, about a foot deep, in the soil of an old meadow that is now a field. The stone was lying horizontally; despite a search, only a few field stones were found under it. In 1932, it was stored on the premises of the farmstead immediately to the west of the finding place, but the owner, Mr. Alb. Persson, pledged to re-erect the stone on the preserved remains of the meadow just to the north-east. Registered in 1921 by fil. dr Harald Hansson” (Lindqvist 1941/42 II, p. 43).
According to the 1978 inventory, the find place is located approximately 100 m south of the farmstead. In 1978 it was still at the farm, leaning against a wall in the garden, where it is situated to the present day.
Measurements, Material and Condition “Sandstone slab, about 10 cm thick, 120 cm high. The obverse is even, the narrow sides levelled at right angles to the obverse up to a height of 97 cm under the point, the reverse rough. The head is 54 cm wide and 32 cm high, the neck 48 cm wide, the base 67 cm wide” (Lindqvist 1941/42 II, p. 43). The mushroom-shaped monument is completely preserved, including the root, which is approximately 20 cm high. The carved surface, however, is much weathered.
Description of Ornament and Images “Little has remained of the decoration except portions of the lines that define the narrow borders (which apparently included a schematised two-stranded band pattern) as well as parts of a sail with rhombic pattern” (Lindqvist 1941/42 II, pp. 43–44).
Interpretation of the Imagery No interpretation
Type and Dating The mushroom-shaped picture stone belongs to Lindqvist’s ʻAbschnittʼ C/D or E. Lindqvist labels it as dwarf stone (approximately 1.00 m height above ground). Its head is almost semi-circular with slightly pronounced corners. As no images and no ornaments nor runic characters are left on the surface, the monument can only be roughly dated to the period between the 8th century (or rather around 800) and the 11th century.
