Context and Discovery
“According to a kind message by A. Edle, there is a fragment of a picture stone as a lintel of a niche (wall cabinet) in the sacristy. Because this niche had been covered by a huge, free-standing cupboard, [Sune Lindqvist] was unable to find this stone again. No details of its shape were imparted” (Lindqvist 1941/42 II, p. 35).

According to the 1977 inventory, there are two pieces of a picture stone in the church; however, they were not inspected at that time. The newspaper article given as only record in the inventory book (Gotlands Allehanda 1972-19-01) offers no information about the picture stone fragments.

The first church on the site was a Romanesque building of the 12th century. In the early 13th century, the current tower was added. During the early 14th century (1270–1285 according to Roosval 1935, p. 20), the Romanesque nave and choir were replaced by the current High Gothic building. The current sacristy, where the picture stone was incorporated, was built at the same time as the Gothic nave and choir (Roosval 1935, p. 23). The current portal of the sacristy was taken from the Romanesque building (ibid. 28).

Several picture stone fragments known were incorporated into a niche in the church. GP 570 Mästerby kyrka (I) was re-used in the same manner as the Bunge stone. It was incorporated into the recessed cabinet in the southern wall of the rectangular apse. The stone forms the ceiling of this sacramental niche, with its obverse facing downwards. This is also the case with GP 26 Bara ödekyrka, which serves as the ceiling or lintel of a wall niche in the choir as well. The Mästerby stone was also discovered by E. Edle (1936).
