Context and Discovery
The stone is included in Gotlands runinskrifter (GR I, G 41). The fragment is known by a letter from David Gadd, head of the local heritage association (Hoburgs hembygdsförening), to runologist Otto von Friesen in 1930. Gadd reported that the runestone fragment had been found some months earlier during agrarian fieldwork. The stone was deposited at the local heritage association, but Gadd thought that there were reasons to report the find to those with expertise. The stone was found on the border between Grötlingbo and Näs, c. 100 m south-west to a medieval house ruin, Viges or ‘Vegå’. Gadd inspected the site but could not find any other piece of the stone. Instead, he found several pieces of sandstone with lime mortar as well as iron slag from smithies. He also informed von Friesen that, according to local tradition, a road used to pass from Viges to Näs on this spot (GR I, p. 56).

According to the inventory record, the stone is kept on the ground floor of the manor at Bottarvegården (Fornsök), i.e., Bottarve Museigård, owned by Hoburgs hembygdsförening since 1918 (the marker in the The National Heritage Board's database for archaeological sites and monuments points to Bottarve gård, where it is stored, not the find spot). There are photos by Alfred Edle in 1936 and Iwar Andersson in 1954 in Run-och bildstenssamlingen (ATA), as well as in Gotlands runinskrifter I (GR I, G 41). However, the present location is unknown.

Sixteen more picture stones have been found in Grötlingbo parish, including the large cemetery at Barshaldershed and ranging from type A to E. In the church in Grötlingbo, another fragmented picture stone-shaped runestone is kept that may be of a similar type, i.e., GP 113 Grötlingbo kyrka (G 37).

Measurements, Material and Condition
Limestone. The size of the fragment is 15.5 cm x 10.5 cm. The height of the runes is c. 3 cm. The edge of the fragment is curved and has been cut evenly, indicating that the fragment originates from a runestone with a rounded head. The runes are deeply carved and rather distinct, although small. The backside was smoothed and polished as well (GR I, p. 56).

Interpretation of the Imagery
No interpretation

Runic Context and Comments
The size of the runes indicates a small stone. Elias Wessén indicates that the stone is of the same type as GP 113 Grötlingbo kyrka (G 37; GR I, p. 56). Magnus Källström mentions the stone in a footnote in his doctoral thesis, a treatise on carver signatures and sponsor formulas with the verb gær(v)a (Källström 2007, p. 90 note 73).

Fyndplats
På gränsen mellan Grötlingbo och Näs.

Nuvarande förvaringsplats
Okänd. Senast kända förvaring är Bottarve Museigård.

Datering
Sen vikingatid, 1000-talet.

Beskrivning
