Context and Discovery The picture stone was found around 1946 by the landowner of Petsarve farm, Claes Olsson, at a depth of about 0.5 m, presumably during construction work near the farmstead. The slab was subsequently cleaned and erected north-northwest of the dwelling house along a field path or tractor road. In January 2020, however, the stone was moved to Gotlands Museum because it stood too close to the road and was in danger of being hit by a tractor, so the landowner wanted the stone to be removed.
Measurements, Material and Condition The limestone slab represents a completely preserved early-type picture stone. The monument is 2.34 m high, 0.94 wide and about 0.18 m thick. The lateral edges are almost completely straight, while the upper edge is relatively strongly convex. The protruding corners at the head are perfectly preserved. The narrow sides do not show any chamfer. The end of the root features a horizontal broken edge. Overall, the surface of the picture stone is completely flat, extremely weathered and partly overgrown with lichen and moss.
Description of Ornament and Images The surface, like the entire stone, is so badly weathered and worn that even with the help of digital tools no remains of ornamentation could be discerned.
Interpretation of the Imagery No interpretation
Type and Dating Tall early-type picture stone, “Abschnitt” A according to Lindqvist’s typology, dating to the period between AD 400 and 600. As no carvings have been preserved, no more detailed classification can be made. However, the shape of the monument (size over 2.00 m, at the same time relatively slim, top strongly convex and strongly protruding corners) corresponds to the stones of the Brotypus and Martebotypus (Lindqvist 1941/42 I, pp. 26–27).
