Context and Discovery
The fragment was found in Gotlands Museum storage without bearing an inventory number or further information.

Measurements, Material and Condition
The fragment preserves approximately the upper left quarter of a small picture stone from the early type. About half of the left lateral edge (39 cm), the left half of the slightly convex upper edge (33 cm) and the characteristic corner at the upper left are preserved. The narrow sides are carved straight at right angles to the face. A shallow-angled bevelled edge is visible in places between the narrow side and the face. The surface is flat but very irregularly textured and partly rough and coarse. Overall, the stone gives the impression of being weathered. The limestone slab is 9 cm thick.

Description of Ornament and Images
A carved double line runs along the preserved lateral and upper edges. In the upper area of the fragment, directly under the upper border, i.e., in the left spandrel of the picture stone, there are clear traces of a pictorial representation, which, however, can hardly be interpreted. It is a complex of incised lines, shallowly chiselled areas and slightly raised fields. Particularly clearly visible are two triangular fields, an elongated area that merges into a rounded shape and therefore appears anthropomorphic, and rudimentary pointed oval, leaf-shaped elements. It is considered that these structures represent parts of a rosette motif as on GP 527 Tofta kyrka 1, or a human figure, perhaps even a rider, who is winged or wearing a cloak or shield.

Type and Dating
The fragment represents an early-type picture stone, ʻAbschnittʼ A according to Lindqvist’s typology, dating between AD 400 and 600. The stone is unlikely to have been more than 100 cm high and can therefore be counted among the ʻdwarf stonesʼ of type A (Burstypus after Lindqvist 1941/42 I, p. 31). If the fragment did indeed have a rosette motif in the left half of the head field (see VI), and presumably another small roundel in the right half, then it would be close to the dwarf stone GP 527 Tofta kyrka 1 in every respect (also including size, shape and border). In Hauck’s contribution to the typology of Gotland’s early picture stones, the Tofta stone is considered typical of group VI, the Toftatypus. In this small group Hauck subsumes small picture stones that show star and/or rosette motifs as their central motif (1983a, p. 545).
