Context and Discovery
The picture stone was found in the 1930s on the property of landowner Helmer Andersson, approx. 150 m east of his farm Mallgårds in Hejnum parish. It was discovered by Andersson in the area of an old road, on solid ground. After its discovery, the stone was moved to the farmyard, where it is kept among other archaeologically relevant stone finds (RAÄ Hejnum 114) – a stone with sliprännor (grinding grooves), presumably a medieval column base, and perhaps a gravklot (large spherical stone). In 1952 or 1953, another picture stone was found at the same spot, close to the one discussed here, but in a swampy area of the old road, apparently re-used as filling material (GP 191 Hejnum Mallgårds 1). This one is now placed next to the driveway leading to the farmyard. Both finds were reported to RAÄ by Erik Nylén in 1960 (ATA dnr 990/60, 1960-01-21, including photos).

Measurements, Material and Condition
The picture stone is 0.70 m high and 0.56 m wide. The monument is almost complete, only the lowest part and the root seem to be broken off. Thus, the monument must have been quite small, less than 1.00 m high. A small part of the surface, at one of the head’s corners, seems to be cracked and broken away. Otherwise, the stone itself is almost perfectly preserved. However, remains of carvings can no longer be determined, as the limestone slab is too weathered.

Description of Ornament and Images
No traces of carvings are discernible with certainty.

Interpretation of the Imagery
No interpretation

Type and Dating
Since the stone is almost complete and only its lowest part is lost, it cannot have been much larger, probably less than 1.00 m in total. The shape (convex head with corners protruding at right angles to the stone’s body) and the size of the dwarf stone indicate a Type B picture stone, dating between AD 500 and 700. Type B stones like GP 248 Lärbro Källstäde and GP 365 Stenkyrka kyrka IV are good parallels for its shape.
