Year of Discovery 1887
Runic Inscription or not No
Context and Discovery In 1887, Fredrik Nordin recognized this piece as a picture stone, which is still used as a building stone in the southern wall of Bro Church. It is placed with the head of the former stele towards the west, laying on the left side. HS
Measurements, Material and Condition The limestone slab was worked into a rectangular block by cutting off all four sides straight, in order to be used as spolia in the building. Its original dimensions are therefore not preserved. The actual measurements of the worked stone are 1.86 m x 0.94 m. The depth remains unknown since the stele cannot be taken out of the wall. Lindqvist (1941, 26) suggests an estimated original height of 2.50 m in comparison with other monuments. Despite its secondarily worked condition and a rather severe surface damage, the majority of the decoration is still preserved. Unfortunately, its placement in the church wall and the damage it received does not allow reveal whether the stele had chamfered edges. But, even though worked into a rectangular block, the cut off framing lines at the top indicate that the stone originally had an axe shape. HS
